Penelope's Faithful Trick was mused after Penelope's famous delaying tactic in Homer's The Odyssey, where she tricks the suitors for years by promising to marry one of them after the completion of the burial shroud for her Odysseus's father, Laertes, only to undo her progress every night. As a woman of the Odyssey, Penelope embodies cleverness and loyalty.
The composition of the piece is influenced by Baroque painter Caravaggio's use of light and darkness and how the lamp is the only source bringing Penelope's trick to the light.
