Achilles Fights The River God was mused after the scene in the Iliad, a nearly 3,000 year old poem credited to Greek poet Homer, where Achilles turns his rage to Scamander, the river god, after he has littered Scamander’s river with the bodies of Trojans soldiers after finding out Hector killed Patroclus.
Scamander tries to drown a raging Achilles, symbolizing his outward rage into the old saying “drowning in your grief”. This piece hits home for the artist, who poured her own grief of losing her mom into Achilles’ grief.
